How to Delete Group Chat in Messenger
It’s no doubt that group chats on platforms such as Messenger bring people closer together. All the talks, activities, and celebrations are worth it. Although you can remove participants individually from the group chat, sometimes, you might wish to delete it entirely.
Facebook Messenger does not provide any such direct option to delete the group chat at once, even if you are the admin. However, you have a workaround that could help you with the same.
1. Open Messenger and navigate to the group chat you wish to delete.
2. Tap on the i button at the top-right corner, followed by See members.
3. Now, in the Members tab, tap on the username of any member.
4. Tap on Remove from group chat.
5. Similarly remove all the members.
6. Once there is no one else in the group, tap on the three vertical dots icon at the top-right corner of Group info.
7. Tap on Leave group and then on LEAVE to confirm.

How to Delete Group Chat in Messenger if You Are Not Admin?
If you are not the admin of a group chat on Facebook Messenger, unfortunately, you cannot delete it. However, these are a few things you can do instead:
Method 1. Leave the Group Chat
If you don’t want to be part of the group chat, simply you can leave it. Follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Open Messenger and tap and hold the Group chat in the inbox.
2. In the pop-up, tap on Leave group.
3. Tap on LEAVE to confirm.
Method 2. Ask the Current Admin to Give You the Rights
If you still want to delete the group chat, you need administrative rights for it. Text the present admin of the group chat to make you admin. Once you become the admin of the group chat, you can delete it following the above-mentioned steps.
What Happens When You Delete a Group Chat on Messenger
You do not exactly delete the group chat, instead you remove all the members including yourself from it. So, technically the chat stays on the server. However:
- The chat thread gets removed completely, and cannot send, receive, or see the messages in that group anymore.
- The participants who were removed from the group can see the messages but cannot send or receive any.
On the other hand, if you only remove other participants from the group and do not leave it yourself, you can see the messages and use the group for self-interaction, in case you need it.
