Lenovo and HP – the backstory

Before we went head down in comparing the two major brands for their features and more, let us take a moment first to look at how they came to be in existence.

HP, which is the acronym of Hewlett-Packard, is a company based in America. It was founded in 1939 in Palo Alto, California. The company started really small – in a single car garage, to be precise. However, thanks to their innovation, determination, and hard work, they went to become the biggest PC manufacturer in the world. They boasted this title for a whopping six years, starting in 2007 and carrying it on till 2013. In 2013, they lost the title to Lenovo – the other brand we are going to talk about in a bit – and then regained it again back in 2017. But they again had to fight since Lenovo regained the title back in 2018. The company produces a wide range of laptops, mainframe computers, calculators, printers, scanners, and many more.

On the other hand, Lenovo was founded in 1984 in Beijing, China. The brand was known originally as Legend. The company overtook the PC business of IBM in 2005. Ever since then, there has been no looking back for them. Now, they have a workforce of more than 54,000 employees at their disposal. The company is responsible for producing some of the best laptops out there in the market at affordable prices. Although it is quite a young company – especially when compared to the companies such as HP – it garnered quite a name for itself.

Now, let us take a look at where each of the brands excels and where they fall short. To be honest, the brands do not differ much from each other. Both are reputed brands with amazing products. Whenever you want to choose between an HP laptop and a Lenovo laptop, do not make the brand name the only detrimental factor. Keep in mind to check the specs and features offered by that particular device as well. To put it in a nutshell, you cannot go wrong with either one. Read along.

Brief Overview of HP vs Lenovo

Lenovo

In recent years, Lenovo has produced some of the most popular laptops. In Asia, the Chinese brand is well-known, but its appeal has risen dramatically in recent years. In 2020, the Thinkpad was the most popular professional laptop, while the Ideapad will appeal to more casual users.

Lenovo laptops are among the most economical quality laptops available, providing excellent value for money. This is mostly owing to the quality and affordability of their laptops, which are often less expensive than luxury brands while keeping the same level of performance. They’re far superior to Acer in terms of quality, but they’re not as pricey as Dell.

HP

In general, HP is a well-known laptop brand that consistently ranks among the top sales year after year. Because they’re known for being pricy, there aren’t many bargains among their goods. They’re one of the few big-name manufacturers that have successfully entered the gaming market, and their HP Omen line is recognized for being a good gaming laptop.

They have a large selection of laptops, many of which are high-end options, but they also have some more affordable options, like the Pavilion series. The majority of them are built using Nvidia Geforce graphics cards and Intel Core CPUs, which cost more than generic components.

Lenovo vs HP

For those searching for a capable laptop, both HP and Lenovo are solid options, and it all depends on what you’re looking for. It’s difficult to compare whole brands because each model has its own set of specs.

1. Price

Many Lenovo and HP basic laptops can now provide amazing digital experiences for a fraction of the cost.

Lenovo

  • Lenovo’s entry-level laptops may start at $118.
  • That is already one of the more cost-effective solutions.

HP

Lenovo is the clear victor in the pricing category between Lenovo and HP laptops.

2. Storage Capacity

It is vital to be aware of the qualities that must be examined before buying, such as storage, among other things. However, we do not want a laptop that slows down just because we have so many critical files on it.

Lenovo

  • Lenovo is the finest laptop for professionals since it produces models that are tailored to their demands.
  • Take one of their best business laptops, for example, the Thinkpad X1 has a total capacity of 256 GB.

HP

  • In the storage duel between Lenovo and HP, HP comes out on top.
  • However, the benefits of this technology are best shown on HP’s Omen gaming laptops. We’re referring to the computers’ incredible 1TB storage capacity.

While HP laptops are normally more expensive, the benefits of having a large storage capacity outweigh the costs.

  • This is excellent security when you leave your computer unattended in public places.
  • That includes everything from a fingerprint scanner to a Kensington lock slot.

HP

  • In several HP consumer computers, there are two [R] key features.
  • One of them is the HP Sure View Integrated Privacy Screen.
  • This function allows you to make your screen white to protect yourself from outsiders who might want to see your confidential information.
  • It would be hard to observe anything on your laptop at a 45-degree angle.
  • With the Webcam Kill Switch function, you won’t have to worry about unwanted online surveillance.

The two companies addressed many of the common concerns about privacy that come with frequent laptop use. With these features, you may feel safe, secure, and protected when using my services.

4. Performance

We all seek a laptop that can meet our creative and professional demands. To be called high-performing for usage, most efficient manufacturers nowadays should be offering laptops with at least an i5 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Thankfully, HP and Lenovo both have it.

Lenovo

  • An Intel® CoreTM i5-1135G7 CPU and 8 GB LPDDR4X 4266MHz RAM power the Lenovo Yoga ThinkPad X1 Gen 6.
  • It has the Intel Evo certification and a battery life of 16 hours.
  • The processing power of these fantastic laptops is sufficient for all of your requirements and more.

HP

  • With the HP Spectre Folio, you can count on innovation. HP makes a series of 2-in-1 laptops that can go from laptop to tablet mode in a matter of seconds.
  • Like the incredible HP Spectre x360, which has a Core i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, and a battery life of 16.30 hours [R], which is ideal for the multitasker in me.

Between the two, HP gaming laptops appear to be the superior option. If you’re ready to spend a little extra, HP can provide you with the ultimate gaming laptop, complete with outstanding adaptability, storage, graphics, and speed. Lenovo is still a wonderful second choice for a superb gaming laptop if you’re not ready to make the big jump.

6. Laptop Reliability and Support

It’s important to have access to a support team that can answer your inquiries. Both brands have well-established reach lines.

Lenovo

HP

  • HP provides customer care through chat, social media, and even community forums.
  • They provide a 12-month guarantee and will pay for the shipment of your repaired equipment.

Although both HP and Lenovo have easily accessible service channels, we must award this to Lenovo. HP lags behind Lenovo in terms of customer service and is notorious for long phone wait times.

7. Innovation

Lenovo

  • The Yoga Book C940 will assist you in fully comprehending what we are discussing.
  • This futuristic technology is the world’s first laptop with two displays.
  • One of the two displays can also be used as a keyboard.
  • It may also be used as an eReader or a digital notebook for sketching and taking notes.
  • It’s one of the most versatile and portable laptops on the market.

HP

  • In contrast, HP laptops are frequently clam-shell designs with a traditional look.
  • Another HP product, SureScreen Views, makes it tough for prying eyes to see what you’re doing.
  • Although HP laptops may be changed to lightweight and convertible variants, this is the company’s most inventive model.
  • HP ZBook workstation laptops, for example, include top-of-the-line features like a 4K display and remarkable speed and ability to manage demanding workloads.
  • On Spectre x360 notebooks, the webcam kill-switch is accessible.
  • The HP Spectre Folio is a two-in-one unlike any other.
  • It has a clever hinge that allows you to transform from clamshell to tablet mode with one hand.

Lenovo’s ultra-light laptops, inventive folding choices, and offers like the Flex and Yoga series make it a pioneer in innovation. Because they can fold in a variety of ways, the Flex and Yoga series are excellent business companions.

8. Business

Let’s compare and contrast business laptops from HP and Lenovo.

Lenovo

  • Lenovo’s laptop costs less than $600 and includes an SSD.
  • It should also be easy to transport because it is the lightest and small.
  • The nicest part about it is how easy it is to use and how portable it is.
  • Because switching from laptop to tablet mode takes only a few seconds. As a result, you’ll be able to access your files at any time and from any location.
  • The Lenovo Yoga 2022 is a great option if you want something more high-end.
  • This laptop is quick, fluid, convertible, and powerful. When you combine this with the longest battery life, you’ll be able to watch any show all day.

HP

  • A laptop that competes with the Lenovo Yoga is the HP zBook.

Our recommendation is Lenovo. This is owing to their convertible laptop range, which includes the Lenovo Flex.

9. Chromebooks

Chromebooks are ideal for folks who only require a laptop for light work and streaming. This is because they lack the specifications required for high-end tasks. They are, nevertheless, fairly priced.

Lenovo

  • Chromebooks, like the Lenovo C330, are really handy.
  • This model works well in both laptop and tablet modes for maximum convenience.
  • It has an Intel Core i5 CPU from the 8th generation, which is unusual for Chromebooks.
  • 8GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage are also available.
  • it converts, but it’s also on the pricey side in terms of construction and budget, at over $600.

HP

  • HP is the most cost-effective option. This is due to their well-designed, powerful, and cost-effective nature.
  • Most mid-range to low-cost HP Chromebooks, such as the Newest HP 14, use a Celeron or AMD CPU.
  • This is substantially faster than the MediaTek Processor found in Lenovo Chromebooks.
  • The fact that their Chromebooks are not convertible is a small drawback. They are portable since they are light and tiny.
  • You are not required to believe us. Here’s how Intel compares MediaTek and Celeron CPUs.

HP is our choice in this case. Only because speed and power take precedence above portability.

10. Build Quality & Hardware

Your laptop is worthless if it lacks the essential components and is poorly constructed. Buyers are frequently focused on software, overlooking critical elements like as hardware and a solid design.

Lenovo

  • The Lenovo IdeaPad is an example of good build quality and hardware. This Lenovo IdeaPad 1 tablet is great for storing large amounts of films, photographs, and music.
  • The anti-glare screen and ergonomic touchpad of the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 alleviate strain on the eyes, wrists, and hands.
  • For them to use their computers on a daily basis, ergonomics and an impact-resistant screen are important.

HP

  • For any budget, HP laptops are regarded for their dependability and good performance.
  • One of the company’s hallmark products is the Omen 15.
  • Omen is a gaming laptop featuring a 15.6-inch screen, a 6-core CPU, and a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
  • The Omen, on the other hand, is not very portable, weighing 7.94 pounds.
  • The HP Omen 15 is a great example of the company’s build excellence.
  • Despite the fact that certain HP laptops are portable, the company’s main worry is the lack of design adaptability.

In comparison to Lenovo, HP’s build quality is superior. Lenovo is a high-end laptop that is quite expensive. A more costly laptop does not always imply a higher build quality or greater hardware.

  1. You contradict yourelf. Earlier in the guide you state that Lenovo is the most durable, “This is one of the biggest advantages of Lenovo laptops. They can last for years. The reason behind this is they have some amazing technical specs and features. In addition to that, they also have a physical build that can take quite a lot of punishment, getting dropped on the floor, for example. Therefore, you can use a laptop for quite a long time, saving you a lot of trouble as well as money.”
But in the second to last paragraphy you say the opposite, “Now if you’re a traveller or looking for durability, then HP is the brand that you should trust. As far as the design goes then, HP has a wider range of laptops to choose from. So in durability and design, HP is a clear winner as Lenovo lacks sturdiness.” So which is it? Is Lenovo durable and will last a long time (even if dropped on the floor) or does it lack sturdiness?”

  3. I want an everyday and am stuck between HP with AMD Ryzen3, and Lenovo with i5. I do not play games, just use internet and word processing. But I have no patience for waiting and want a fast laptop. Is it worth paying more for HP?

  4. The Lenovo Thinkcentre laptop is used by NASA.
It is the only computer that has been used in space. That is quite a resume and a good example of quality and durability by anyone’s standards.
This article is inaccurate and contradictory – as previously stated by the other comments.
I have a Lenovo laptop with 64 GB RAM and 2 TB of storage – fantastic graphics and has a military grade hardware / durability specification.
You can’t really say that about any other laptop brand.
