How to Tame Animals in Minecraft

Animals add life and diversity to Minecraft’s pixelated landscape. Moreover, the range not only includes domestic animals but also exotic creatures like wolves and polar bears roaming in the game. You can tame, interact, and even use them for multiple purposes.

When you tame, i.e., domesticate an animal in the game, you gain their trust and they become loyal to you. Some may follow you around, some can be commanded to sit, stand, & attack hostile mobs, and some allow you to ride them.

Option 1: Attract and Tame Sheep in Minecraft

You need wheat to attract sheep in the game, which you can grow on vacant ground near water. Use your hoe and plant it by right-clicking on the ground. After 2 or 3 Minecraft days you can harvest it. When you have wheat, hold it in your hand and a sheep will start to follow you.

How to Attract Sheep in Minecraft

You can’t tame a sheep in the game, you can only attract them and breed them. All you have to do is:

  • Attract it in an enclosed space that you can construct using fences and then close the gates. Repeat this same process with another sheep.
  • Feed these sheep with the wheat you grew by standing in front of each of them and clicking the wheat icon in Hotbar.

Once hearts appear above them, you will soon have a family of sheep. Repeat this process with different colored sheep too and this way you will be able to start a sheep farm. Always separate sheep according to their color to avoid confusion while breeding.

Option 2: Tame Horses & Donkeys in Minecraft

Horses, llamas, mules, and donkeys are attracted to golden apples and carrots. However, you do not need any special item to tame them.

  • Get close to them and try to hop on their back.
  • It may so happen, they might throw you off a few times, but if you do it repeatedly, they’ll start to trust you. You’ll see hearts appear over their heads when they do so.

But, remember that to steer them in the direction you want, you’ll need to use a saddle. If you don’t have one, you can use a Lead to guide them home and prevent them from roaming.

Horses are the speediest option and can even wear Horse Armor for protection. On the other hand, Donkeys and Mules are a bit slower but can carry extra items for you if you equip them with a Chest. Once these animals trust you, you can ride them as much as you like.

Option 3: Attract and Tame Pigs in Minecraft

Pigs too have their favorite food items which in their case are potatoes, carrots, and beetroot. The food items cannot be found in the wild. Therefore, you will have to search the village for them.

Like sheep, even pigs cannot be tamed directly. But there is a workaround.

  • You can attract them into an enclosed space that you can construct using fences and afterward close the gates.
  • After you have gathered some pigs, you may feed them the food items after which they will breed.

Tamed pigs can give you pork chops which is one of the best foods in Minecraft. You can even ride these creatures using a saddle. But as they don’t have reins, you must create a tool to lure them in the direction using a fishing rod and a food item like a carrot.

Option 4: Tame Wolves in Minecraft

You can use the bones you’ve collected or any raw or cooked meat other than fish to make a wolf your friend in the game. But be ready with more than just one, as a single Bone might not do the trick. Give them a few Bones, and when you see hearts and a colorful collar around the Wolf’s neck, it means you’ve tamed it.

Once they have a red collar, they’ll become your loyal companion. They’ll protect you by attacking many hostile creatures and even other players who try to hurt you if you attack them. You can also command your tamed Wolf to sit and stay in one place until you’re ready for them to follow you again.

Option 5: Tame Cats in Minecraft

Having a cat tamed is quite similar to a wolf but just a little more difficult. Cats in Minecraft have a soft spot for raw salmon or raw cod. If you spot a kitten hanging around a Village or a Witch’s Hut, don’t rush towards them. They can get scared and run off. Instead, grab your Fishing Rod and head to the nearest water source.

Approach the cat you want to tame carefully. Crouch-walk up to them and offer them the fish until you see hearts and a red collar appear around their neck.

Once they’re your buddy, these Cats will follow you like a loyal dog, although they won’t attack anyone on your behalf. But here’s the cool part: those annoying Creepers and pesky Phantoms won’t bother you anymore when they’re around.

Option 6: Tame Chickens in Minecraft

Chickens are one of the easiest animals to tame in Minecraft. First of all, you need to collect their favorite food which is seeds. To collect them you can hit them with a stick or hand on the ground. Only a single seed would be enough.

After that approach the chicken and let it follow you into an enclosed space like we explained for sheep. Add some more chickens and give them food till you see a heart over their head so that they can breed. Soon you will have an arm of chicken that can provide you with eggs.

Option 7: Attract and Tame Cows in Minecraft

Cows are attracted to wheat which you can get from the village and can be tamed similarly as we tame sheep or chickens in Minecraft.

  • Grow some wheat and then harvest it after a day or two (Minecraft time).
  • Keep this wheat in your hot bar and approach a cow. Click on Feed Them when the option appears.

It will be successfully tamed once hearts appear over its head. Now create a fence around it. Increase your cow farm size because it has a lot of benefits like milk, cow meat, and leather which can be used to create armor.
