Minecraft’s procedurally-generated 3D world invites players to build and survive in blocks. However, in this pixelated universe of boundless creativity and adventure, water can be both a friend and a foe. Despite its importance for survival and crafting, sometimes it can overflow and wreak havoc on your carefully designed landscapes. Now the question remains, how to get rid of water in Minecraft? Is there a command for it? Let’s find out!
How to Get Rid of Water in Minecraft
Minecraft has captured the hearts of millions of players around the world by offering them the freedom to extract raw materials, craft tools, and items, build structures, and shape the game’s environment according to their imagination. Water although is an essential element in the game. But sometimes, you might need to remove it from a specific area to build your desired structures. So, what’s the wait for? Let’s do it.
Quick Answer
To get rid of water in Minecraft, simply place the sponge in the water and it will absorb all the water in a 5x5x5 block area.
Method 1: Use Sponge
A sponge has the ability to absorb water from a specific location, i.e., within a seven-block radius of itself, and create a dry space underwater. As it turns into a wet sponge, you can smelt it in a furnace to revert it to its initial condition.
You can find sponges in ocean monuments or you can defeat an Elder Guardian to get them. Once you have it:
1. Put walls in between to split the waterlogged area into small sections.
2. Place a sponge in the center of each section or on the wall.
Note: You can place them directly underwater or adjacent to water source blocks.
That is it! It will absorb all the water around them in a 5x5x5 block area. If the area is large, you might need to use multiple sponges.
Each sponge can absorb a limited amount of water before becoming a wet sponge. You need to dry them out using a furnace. You can use Kelp blocks to smelt them. One Kelp block can dry 20 sponges.
Method 2: Use Blocks to Replace Water
One of the most effective ways is to stop the flow of water from the source. Locate the source block of water and place a solid block on it to replace the source. Once the barrier is created, remove it to drain the water.

Method 3: Use Sand and Gravel
You can also use sand, gravel, or even red sand to get rid of water fast from larger areas or deep pools in Minecraft. As they are affected by gravity, once the block under them is removed, they start falling, removing water in the area as well.
Note: Make sure to collect a lot of sand or gravel as preferred.
1. Stand on the edge of the ground above the water surface.
2. Start placing the sand or gravel blocks directly below you to fill the column.
Every time a block is placed, it will sink until the column gets filled.
3. Continue to place the blocks on top of each other in a straight line to extend the column and create a barrier.
4. Once the water flow is blocked out, fill the rest water area with sand or gravel blocks until completely covered.
5. Now mine and break the blocks to clear the area.
This will displace the water and create an air pocket to prevent water from flowing back into the space.
Method 4: Use Buckets
Buckets are great if you want to remove water from a small area. Moreover, they also help create a dam to prevent water from flowing into an area.
1. To craft buckets, use iron ingots in a V shape on the crafting table.
2. Now holding an empty bucket in hand, approach the water block you want to remove and right-click to pick it up.
3. Move toward a space to place the water block there.
4. Repeat the process for each block you want to remove.

Method 5: Use Torch
You can use a torch to remove a singular block of water. All you need to do is place the torch down on the block and break it to remove water.
Method 6: Use Lava
You can use Lava to remove water from a large area. However, do note that it is not recommended to follow this method near flammable materials or in areas where you want to preserve the landscape. Be careful to not pour lava on structures as it can damage or destroy them.
1. Use blocks to create a barrier around the area from where you want to remove water.
This will prevent it from spreading to unwanted areas.
2. Build a container using non-flammable blocks like stone, cobblestone, or dirt, and place a lava block inside it.
3. Let the lava flow outward.
Once it touches the water source blocks, it would turn into stone (if submerged) or cobblestone (if adjacent).
4. After the lava cools down, the water source would become obsidian blocks which can be mined to clear out.

Method 7: Use Flammable Items
You can use flammable blocks such as leaves, wood, plants, or wool to get rid of water in Minecraft. Although this method is a bit unconventional, it can work in specific situations, especially if you are unable to find the location of the water source.
1. Create a barrier around the area where you want to remove the water and fill it with flammable materials.
2. Use flint and steel to ignite the flammable blocks, which then would catch fire and turn into air blocks, displacing the water.
3. Clear the ash or burned materials and mine & break removing blocks if any.
Is There a Minecraft Command to Get Rid of Water?
Yes, there are two commands: /fill and /setblock that can be used to get rid of water fast in Minecraft. However, it would not help you in areas with a high water flow rate or where you want to preserve any underwater structures or landscapes.
Note: You need to specify coordinates (X, Y, and Z) that define the area from which water needs to be removed. Make sure to enable the Show Coordinates option in the game settings.
- /fill: It allows players to replace all water blocks within the specified area with air blocks. Here’s how to use it:
1. Place a block in one corner of the area from where water is to be removed.
2. Note down the appropriate coordinates.
3. Now, move to the opposite corner and note down its coordinates as well.
4. Once the sets are identified, press the forward-slash key or T on the keyboard to open the chat window.
5. Type /fill [x1 y1 z1] [x2 y2 z2] air replace water in the window.
Replace [x1, [y1], [z1], [x2], [y2], and [z2] with the actual coordinates of both corners.
6. Press Enter to execute the command.
That is it! All the water blocks in that area will be replaced with air.
- /setblock: If you want to replace individual water blocks, you can use this command. Just enter /setblock x y z air in the chat window and replace x, y, and z with the coordinates of the water block.

What Blocks Can Stop Water Minecraft?
There are several blocks that can be used to stop, control the flow, or contain water in Minecraft. Some of them are:
- Dirt, Sand, and Gravel: These blocks can create a barrier to stop water from flowing. Moreover, you can also build walls or dams with dirt to contain water.
- Water Gate, Flood Gate, or Fence Gate: Doors and trapdoors are used in designs of such gates that can stop the flow of water. As water gates are adjustable, they are used to control water flow by either shrinking the stream or stopping it altogether. You can make them easily with pistons and Redstone.
- Cobblestone and Stone Bricks: Water cannot flow through these solid blocks. Hence, these can be used to build walls and barriers to contain water and get rid of it in Minecraft.
- Glass Blocks: These blocks are non-solid. so water cannot flow through them. They’re useful for creating transparent barriers.
- Stairs and Slabs: When placed horizontally, waterlogged blocks such as stairs and slabs can keep the water from flowing.
- Obsidian: You can create watertight structures with obsidian.
- Signs: Signs can be placed in water to stop its flow. However, they can only stop water from flowing horizontally and not vertically.
- Honey Blocks: They act as a barrier against water to prevent its flow.

Do Pistons Stop Water?
Yes, Pistons can stop the water in Minecraft. A water gate can be created using two pistons facing into a channel that, when extended, occupy the channel and prevent water from flowing.
Additionally, pistons can be used to stop water flow by powering a block adjacent to the piston with a repeater. However, they can only stop water from source blocks, not from flowing water. So, if the water is flowing, it will continue to flow past the piston.

Is Water Useful in Minecraft?
Yes, of course! Water is a fundamental and essential element in the game. Apart from survival, it serves multiple purposes that contribute to the gameplay, such as:
- Farming: You need it to irrigate and hydrate farmland, allowing crops to grow faster and yield better harvests.
- Extinguish Fire and Mob Control: Water can be used to put out fires. It is also needed to control mobs and funnel them into specific areas or away from certain places.
- Transportation: You can explore water bodies such as rivers and oceans and use boats or swims to travel quickly between different locations.
- Cooling Lava and Obtaining Obsidian: For a safe traversal in the Nether, water can cool lava sources and turn them into cobblestones. You can mine obsidian from here.
- Decoration and Aesthetics: You can use it to build waterfalls and fountains, or even create artificial lakes or pools to enhance the looks of your creations.
- Brewing: Brewing stands require water bottles to brew potions that can be used for healing, strength, or invisibility.
- Elevator: Water can be used to create an elevator by placing water source blocks in a vertical shaft.
