What is the Difference between IMAP and POP3?
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) are both email protocols used to retrieve emails from a mail server to your email client.
IMAP is better suited for users who access their emails from multiple devices and want their emails to be synced across all devices. POP3, on the other hand, may be more suitable for users who primarily access their emails from a single device and want to conserve server storage space.
Refer to the below table for detailed insights:
Differences | IMAP | POP3 |
Email Storage | Emails remain stored on the server, and the email client syncs with it. You can access your emails from multiple devices, and actions (like marking emails as read or deleting them) are reflected across all devices. | Emails are downloaded from the server to the email client and typically removed from the server (though there’s usually an option to leave a copy on the server). Once downloaded, emails are only available on the device where they were downloaded. |
Offline Access | Allows for offline access to emails, but the email client needs to sync with the server to update changes made while offline. | Provides offline access to emails since they’re downloaded to the device. However, changes made to emails while offline won’t be reflected on the server. |
Multiple Devices | Suitable for accessing emails from multiple devices since emails remain stored on the server. | More suitable for single-device access since emails are typically downloaded and removed from the server. |
Storage Space | Relies on server storage space since emails are stored on the server. | Relies on client-side storage space since emails are downloaded to the device. |
