How Do Facebook Ads Work
Facebook collects vast amounts of data about its users. This includes their interest, the type of content they engage most with, as well as demographics. This data is then used to target you with specially designed ads considering these factors.
Sponsored ads on Facebook appear in various areas like posts in your news feed, sidebar ads, and sponsored stories.
Method 1: Adjust Your Ad Preferences
Facebook has this option to customize your ad preferences which will allow you to control the types of ads you see.
- Open Facebook and tap on the three-line icon in the top right corner.
- Tap on Select Settings & Privacy and then on Settings.
- Tap on Accounts Centre and then on Ad preferences under Account settings.

Method 2: Adjust Ad Topics
Ad topics are the section where you can view and manage interests and categories that Facebook uses to show you ads. You can remove as well as add interests according to your preferences.
- Follow the steps mentioned in Method 1 till Step 3.
- Tap on Ad topics and then on Review topic choices.
- Tap on See less for the topics you don’t want.
Method 3: Remove Advertisers You’ve Seen
In settings, you can also see businesses and advertisers that have uploaded your information to Facebook for ad-targeting purposes.
- Follow the steps mentioned in Method 1 till Step 3.
- Tap on Advertisers you’ve seen and then on Hide Ads for advertisers that you do not want to see ads anymore.
Method 4: Change Ad Settings
The Ad Settings section allows you to control how Facebook will use your information from partners and other sources to show you ads. You can choose to limit or disable the use of this data for ad targeting.
- Follow the steps mentioned in Method 1 till Step 3.
- Tap on Ad settings and select Activity information from ad partners.
- Tap on Review setting and check for settings.
Method 5: Report Offensive or Inappropriate Ads
You can also report ads to Facebook. It will not only help you hide them from your news feed but also improve your ad suggestions.
- Locate the sponsored ad in your news feed.
- Tap on three dots in the top-right corner of the ad and then on Report ad.
- Choose the reason for reporting the ad, such as Offensive content, Misleading or false information, or Irrelevant to me.
- Tap on Done to report.
