Your efforts to generate leads on LinkedIn pay off as you regularly send requests and build connections with people.
However, it all may go in vain if your LinkedIn account is restricted, you’re forcibly logged out, and now to get back in, you either need to verify your identity or appeal on the platform.
It is termed as LinkedIn jail which stops your ability to connect with and generate new leads for a certain period.
Why does this happen and what to do in such cases? Let’s find out.
Why is My LinkedIn Account Temporarily Restricted and How Can I Reopen it?
If your LinkedIn account is temporarily restricted, you should receive an email notification from LinkedIn explaining the reason for the restriction and providing instructions on how to resolve the issue.
1. Sent too Many Connection Requests
LinkedIn daily connection limitation is typically around 20-25 requests per day and nearly 100 requests per week. If you exceed this limit, you may be temporarily restricted from sending connection requests.
However, this isn’t a defined threshold as the limit on how many requests you can send depends on factors like how old your account is, how many people accept your requests, and how many connections you already have.
In order to avoid restrictions on your account:
- Choose your connections mindfully and send requests only to people who you actually want to interact with.
- Sending random requests may make your account appear as spam. So, write a personalized message explaining the reason you want to connect with them.
- You can send messages via LinkedIn InMail to connect to other people outside of your network as that wouldn’t affect your daily limit.
2. Low Request Acceptance Rate
It is fine if you are sending lots of messages and invitations when you’re new to LinkedIn to make more connections. However, if most people don’t reply to your messages or accept your requests, LinkedIn might think your account is spam.
So, initially, it is better to add people you know personally and then slowly expand your network over time with newer connections.

3. Receive Excessive I don’t Know this Person Flags
If many people you don’t know or have nothing in common with click the I don’t know this person option when you send them connection requests, LinkedIn will notice and consider you as a bot.
It’s better to build a network and connect with people you share interests or connections with, especially when you’re starting. As your profile grows, you’ll get to connect with more diverse people.
4. You Use LinkedIn Automation Tools
Although some LinkedIn automation tools can be really useful, they aren’t allowed on the platform. Moreover, if you use these tools to make connections with people, or flood them with messages, it violates LinkedIn’s User Agreement, and hence, your account might get restricted.
If your account has been restricted due to the use of an automation tool, it is best to disable all such tools and extensions associated with your profile and your account will automatically be recovered.

5. Inappropriate, or Spammy Activity
LinkedIn has some Professional Community Policies that emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe, trustworthy, and professional platform. As long as you’re posting appropriate content and avoiding illegal or questionable behavior, you shouldn’t encounter any problems in this regard.
However, if you share content that violates these policies, your account could be restricted or banned permanently.
If you feel it was done by mistake or you want to recover your account, appeal for a ban and get their team to review their decision.
Also, make sure to maintain a courteous and civil demeanor when using LinkedIn.
6. Logged into Multiple Devices
Logging into your LinkedIn account from multiple devices should not inherently affect your account.
However, if LinkedIn detects unusual login activity or multiple login attempts from different locations that seem suspicious or unauthorized, they may temporarily restrict your account for security reasons.
You can log out of your account on devices you no longer use.

7. Added an Outdated or Inaccessible Email or Phone
Outdated or inaccessible contact information may raise security concerns, as it indicates that your account details may not be up-to-date or secure. LinkedIn may view this as a risk factor and take preventive measures, such as restricting account access until the contact information is updated and verified.
8. Identity Violations
If your profile does not comply with LinkedIn policies or they suspect your identity, it may be restricted and in such cases, you need to get your account verified.

9. Hacked or Compromised LinkedIn
Lastly, LinkedIn may restrict your account temporarily to protect your personal and professional information from being accessed, modified, or misused by unauthorized individuals.
If you suspect that your account has been hacked or compromised, change your password and contact LinkedIn’s customer support to report the security breach and seek assistance.
For How Long Is My LinkedIn Temporarily Restricted?
The duration for which your LinkedIn account remains temporarily restricted can vary depending on the reason for the restriction and last from a few hours to one week.
During the temporary restriction period, you may receive an email or notification from LinkedIn explaining the reason for the restriction and any steps you need to take to resolve the issue and regain full access to your account.

How to Avoid Getting Your LinkedIn Account Restricted
To avoid getting your LinkedIn account restricted, follow these best practices:
- Be Mindful of Daily Limits: On LinkedIn, there are many ways to engage with other users, including sending messages, emails, connection requests, following them, and visiting profiles. Each of these interactions has daily limits that you should adhere to.
- Delete Pending Connection Requests: Manage your pending connection requests proactively. Having many pending requests, especially those that have been pending for an extended period, can raise concerns on LinkedIn.
- Use the Right Automation Tools: Do not hastily subscribe to the first tool you encounter. Instead, invest time in researching and assessing the safety of such tools.
- Engage Before You Pitch: Avoid sending sales pitches in your connection requests. Instead, send thoughtful invitations, mentioning why you’d like to connect.
If your LinkedIn account becomes restricted, it is important to determine the reason and take the necessary steps immediately to verify your identity and rectify the situation.

Strongly agree. Once restricted–even if, supposedly, you have done nothing wrong and the account is restricted due to “suspicious activity,” getting an email or text to someone who can help is essential to get things restored. And this nonsense about repeatedly sending in a Persona document to prove you are who you are, when they already have your Net URL and signature of the same device you routinely use and whom they know quite well, is just harassment.
