Before trying any of the below-listed methods you should try to run System Restore. It’s also recommended to try the method listed in this guide How to fix This Device Cannot Start Code 10 Error.
Method 1: Try Windows Key + Space Shortcut
Before going all gaga over this problem you might consider trying this simple fix, which is pressing Windows Key and Space bar simultaneously which seems to work in almost all the cases.
Also, check that you didn’t accidentally locked your keyboard using some shortcut key, which is typically accessed by pressing Fn key.
Method 2: Make sure to Turn off Filter Keys
1.Press Windows Key + X then select Control Panel.
2.Next, click on Ease of Access and then click “Change how your keyboard works.“
3.Make sure that Turn on Filter Keys option is not checked.
4.If its checked then uncheck it and click Apply followed by OK.
Method 3: Update your Keyboard drivers
1.Press Windows Key + R then type “devmgmt.msc” and hit enter to open Device Manager.
2.Next, expand the Keyboard and right click on Standard PS/2 Keyboard then select “Update Driver Software.“
3.Now first select the option “Search automatically for updated driver software” and complete the driver update process.
4.If above doesn’t fix your problem then select the second option “Browse my computer for driver software.“
5.Click “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.”
6.Select the appropriate driver from the list and click Next.
7.Once the process is finished close the device manager and reboot your PC.
Method 4: Disable Fast Startup
1.Press Windows Key + X then select Control Panel.
2.Click on Hadware and Sound then click on Power Options.
3.Then from the left window pane select “Choose what the power buttons do.“
4.Now click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable.“
5.Uncheck “Turn on fast startup” and click on Save changes.
Method 5: Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
1.Press Windows Key + R then type “devmgmt.msc” and hit enter to open Device Manager.

Hi
My acer aspire3 laptop keyboard suddenly stopped working . I used all methods you given but NOT SOLVED.. Should I check for HARDWARE PROBLEMS in keyboard ?.. PLEASE ADVISE
Thanks and Regards
I have Dell E5440 lattitude series laptop having issue with keyboard. All keys are working but there is lags while pressing keys. I tried all methods but success is unreachable.. Is it hardware problem? Steps you mentioned above I already tried but still I am facing issue with keyboard.
If there is lag, then it can be drivers issue, or some third party app might be interfering with the keyboard drivers, but in my opinion, it seems like a hardware issue as you have already try all the listed methods. If your laptop is under warranty I would recommend you take it to the service repair store and have it checked.
using dell 7567 from last two years, worked fine up to last last year suddenly key board stopped responding only for windows search bar and so and so related with windows, but i am able access key board during internet surfing and gaming , as bharat more said i tried all the above steps and couldnt find the solution , kindly let me know
Great Author, many thanks:
User: My keyboard is not working.
Author: Press Windows Key + R then type “devmgmt.msc” and hit enter to open Device Manager.
Thank you.
There is a common sense called the on-screen keyboard
How are you supposed to apply these fixes when the first thing you say is to press a keyboard button combination? The keyboard isn’t working!
The assumption is you can use USB keyboard or trackpad on your laptop or on-screen keyboard to perform these actions, sorry for not mentioning in the article.
Fixed – Windows key and space bar key together! Thanks
Thanks for the article,
I tried all the solutions, but the problem still persists. I also tried:
– Turn on Filter Keys
– Update BIOS
– “regedit”, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentConrolSet/Services “i8042prt” , change “Start” value to 1 (previously 3)
Nothing has worked.
The only ways to re-enable the keyboard are: restart, hibernate and power on, and suspend and power on (this may be useful to someone)
In fact the fastest way, and what I use, is to suspend, and turn on by pressing the Fn (Function) key that DOES work.
I describe the particularities below:
Lenovo W530 laptop, laptop keyboard, Windows 10
Problem: the keyboard suddenly stops working, always while I’m typing.
To reactivate I suspend and turn on windows (or restart, or hibernate)
The special keys of Fn or Function do work (due to this I can hibernate with Fn + F4, turn on the keyboard light with Fn + Space, etc.)
It is strange that that part of the keyboard works, but the “normal keys do not”.
External USB keyboards do work, and the problem does not arise.
The problem is more frequent when I have restarted the computer, if it has been in use and hibernating for several days, it is less likely to happen, I do not know why.
I don’t know if it could be a hardware problem, or if there was some way to determine it, if that were the case, could I buy another keyboard for this laptop.
Thank you very much for any recommendation.
I faced with totally same issue. Did you managed to solve it?
Also, I saw this issue in HP laptop too, didnt find solution yet.
Lenovo Legion 5, nothing suggested works, it’s like the keyboard is bipolar
My keybored and the screen got frozen and I was doing roblox. My computer can do nothingnow… I tryed all things but it did not work. Please help me aaaaaaaah
If you have installed avast anti virus then uninstalled it as I did, then this link might help https://support.avast.com/en-in/article/36
I uninstalled avast to problems running Firefox and a week later switched on PC and no keyboard.
Hope it helps someone.
Awesome! So many results turn up reinstall drivers and sticky keys suggestions. This was the first one I saw that had the step of the power settings, and in my case that was it! Life saver.
Hi am having a compac PC..inl tried updating my windows from 8.1 to 10 but suddenly I got a pop at the startup page saying “keboard not detected” and right now I can’t login or do anything keboard not working
How do you suggest typing these things in, if the keyboard doesn’t work?
Using a USB keyboard or booting into safe mode or using an on-screen keyboard, there are many options.
My thoughts exactly
