Why is My Camera Not Working on My Android Phone?

Your camera may not be working on your Android phone due to various reasons. Here are some common causes:

  • Corrupted data in the camera app’s cache can lead to malfunctions.
  • If your phone’s storage is full, the camera app might not be able to save photos and videos.
  • An outdated camera app might have bugs that prevent it from working correctly.
  • An outdated Android operating system might have bugs affecting the camera.
  • A temporary glitch in the camera app or phone’s software can cause malfunctions.
  • In rare cases, physical damage to the camera itself might be the culprit.

What to Do if My Camera Is Not Working?

If your camera is not working on your Android phone, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Method 1: Close Background Apps

If the camera on your phone is not working as expected, one way to fix it is to close all background apps. Swipe away any unnecessary apps running in the background and see if that helps fix the issue.

Method 2: Force Quit the Camera App

You can also force quit the camera app. Doing so resolves minor software glitches or conflicts that may be causing the problem.

  1. Open Settings, tap on Apps, and then App Management.
  2. Tap on the Camera app from the list of installed apps.
  3. Tap on the Force quit option on the screen.
  4. Wait a few seconds and then open the camera app again to see if the issue has been resolved.

Method 3: Free Up Storage Space

Insufficient storage space on your device can cause issues with opening the camera app on your phone.

Go through the device storage and delete any files, or apps you no longer need. Additionally, you can move your photos, videos, and other media files to the SD card to free up space on the internal storage.

Method 4: Clear Camera App Cache

Clearing out the cache of the camera app can often resolve the problem.

  1. Go to Settings, then Apps, and App management.
  2. Tap on the Camera app from the list of installed apps.
  3. Then, tap on Storage usage and select Clear cache.

I’ve never even seen the Camera app (or rather, the icon for it) on my Xperia 1. The camera opens with the dedicated button or the lockscreen shortcut but there’s no actual app button, not that I can see.

I was looking for it to see if there was any way of setting up the Camera Roll, which Windows says it needs to access to show my photos on my PC. My photos appear in the (Google) Photos app but again, no mention or sign of any Camera Roll.
