1.Press Windows Key + R then type ‘Devmgmt.msc’ and hit enter to open Device Manager.

5.This time select “Browse my computer for driver software.

7.Select the appropriate driver from the list and click Next.

8.Let the process complete and then restart your PC.

9.Alternatively, go to your manufacturer’s website and download the latest drivers.

Method 2: Perform a Clean Boot

You may put your computer in a clean boot state and check if the issue occurs or not. There could be a possibility that a third-party application is conflicting and causing the issue to occur.

1.Press the Windows Key + R button, then type ‘msconfig’ and click OK.

2.Under General tab under, make sure ‘Selective startup’ is checked.

7.Now in the Startup tab (Inside Task Manager) disable all the startup items which are enabled.

Method 4: Change Notification Time

1.Press Windows Key + I to open Settings then click Ease of Access.

1.Open control panel and in the search box type “troubleshooting.

2.In the search results click on “Troubleshooting” and then select Hardware and Sound.

  1. In my clients case it was a keyboard with a key that was stuck.
    1) unplug the keyboard and wait 15 seconds if it leaves the screen you have taken care of it. if not that is not the problem

  2. My Laptop has the same problem the volume control stuck on top and the worse is the search boxes on my computer or the google gets populated with a character – #”4″. This is a nuisance. At the same time I discovered the #2/@ key not working. I ran system restore etc, but it doesn’t solve the above problems.

  3. Check if the “Volume Up” button on your Logitech (or other) keyboard is stuck on (also check your sticky keys setting.) Press the “Volume Mute”, “Volume Down” and “Volume Up” one at a time and pause to see if the volume widget disappears after a few seconds.

    I did all your steps and still not working. I use an Acer laptop. I have done about everything. Simple volume adjusts and settings changes do not work. I have uninstalled/installed drivers. I have done a clean boot. My microphone is off. No mouse (touchpad). I have done all the “normal” steps, and nothing works. Can’t watch ANY videos, or do anything requiring sound. This only happened two days ago. I saw no updates. Anything “obvious” I have already tried. It stays at zero volume, and if I move it, it goes right back to zero. The mobility screen will not allow me to take it off mute. Nothing I do takes it off mute, although nothing is muted (as far as I know). No external speakers. I’m at wits end!

    To add: FN F8 does nothing. No keys are stuck. Up/down arrows work. I’ve checked all other programs for anything muted, or that use sound. Nothing. I’ve restarted, after changes, about 10 times, or more. All the “common” steps everyone mentions do nothing. Many say just change the volume, or unmute it, or use the slidebar, etc…been there, done that! Nothing. Took out the battery, unplugged it, waited about 15 minutes; no change. Everything else seems to work fine, except the volume.
