WhatsApp has released tons of fun updates that make conversing easier for users. One such feature was the sticker tool that makes it easier to create stickers within the app for iOS. Now, WhatsApp is rolling out another feature that uses iOS 16 APIs and it allows users to extract or detect text from an image.

According to WABetaInfo, “In particular, we announced the ability to extract text right of an image, available to some beta testers that installed the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.1.0.73 update, and WhatsApp is now rolling out this feature to everyone after installing the latest WhatsApp for iOS 23.5.77 update:

While the official changelog on the App Store still mentions that the ability to record and share voice notes through WhatsApp Status is rolling out to everyone, it has been also confirmed by WABetaInfo that, after installing this version of WhatsApp, users can also extract text out of images. If you want to test this feature out then all you need to do is open an image that contains text and you should see a function that lets you copy text from that image.

Additionally, this feature is not compatible with the view once images for added privacy. This ensures that your private photos would be safe and secure. Also, this feature is only available on iOS 16 as WhatsApp uses iOS 16 APIs to detect text within an image.

WhatsApp frequently releases new updates and features to beta users before gradually releasing them globally. The ability to extract or detect text from an image was also tested by the beta testers and fortunately now WhatsApp has started releasing it to everyone.
