Spotify is gearing up for its Stream On event on March 8th, 2023. Prior to that, the music streaming service Spotify launched its AI-Powered DJ feature using OpenAI technology, as announced in a blog post by Spotify on Wednesday.
Personalization appears to be a serious venture for Spotify. Having announced their AI feature called DJ, which aims to provide users with a more personalized listening experience, the company appears to be on a mission to entice more people to continue using their service.

The Spotify DJ is inspired to work like a radio DJ and what they call to be “stunningly realistic voice” delivers a customized selection of music alongside AI-powered spoken commentary about the tracks and artists you love to listen to. For this Spotify has partnered with Xavier “X” Jernigan, the host of one of its daily morning podcasts ‘The GetUp’ to provide voice for the AI.
“To create the DJ we reimagined the way users listen on Spotify. The DJ knows you and your music taste so well that it will scan the latest releases we know you’ll like, or take you back to that nostalgic playlist you had on repeat last year,” writes Spotify Newsroom.
While there are already numerous personalized listening capabilities built into the service like its Daily Mix and its flagship Discovery Weekly that serve auto-generated playlists for the user, the difference here implies an impression that the streaming service knows its users so well that the DJ using its interactive personalization technology and generative AI through Open AI technology, can choose what to play for a user on its own when they click the play button. The AI DJ sorts through a user’s latest and repetitive listens, scrolls through the history and then feeds a stream that delivers a personalized playlist.
Spotify old personalized playlists included Release Radar, Daily Mixes, Your Time Capsule and more, with others aimed at specific activities like a workout or a fall to sleep time. Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year is also a delight for its users.
“The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don’t like!), the better its recommendations get.”
Listeners will also have the option to ‘switch it up’ in case they are displeased with the curated playlist.
“We have experts in genres who know music and culture inside and out. And no one knows the music scene better than they do. With this generative AI tooling, our editors are able to scale their innate knowledge in ways never before possible.”
Spotify says their team which includes music editors, experts, scriptwriters and data curators have been provided access to OpenAI’s technology so they can enable accurate and culturally relevant commentary.
The AI DJ feature has begun rolling out in English for Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada and will be expanding to more countries in the near future after a stable rollout.
To access the DJ:
1. Launch the Spotify mobile app on iOS or Android.
2. Head to the Music feed on the home page.
3. Tap ‘Play on DJ card’ and the DJ will stream a line-up of personalized music and commentary.
4. If you want to shuffle between genres, artists and moods, hit the DJ button at the bottom-right.
