PlayStation to Hit 6 Billion Mark

Somewhere between PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 5 most of us grew up. Some of us still have one or the other PlayStation device and use it regularly or scarcely but it is still a part of our lives. It is people like us and the new and the old users that are now set to be a part of something important in PlayStation history. PlayStation to hit 6 billion mark and break it for the number of games sold by mid-2023 and we have all been a part or are still a part of this historic feat that we will have been responsible for shortly.

PlayStation to Hit 6 Billion Mark

It was not just PlayStation 1 to 5 that the company launched but there was also a PSP and a PS Vita launched by them which were handheld devices, unlike the bigger consoles whose remote was bigger than these portable models. However, without taking the sales of the game on PS Vita into account the company as of now stands at the figure of 5.913 billion games sold which they achieved during the holiday period of Q3.

86.5 million games were sold by Sony in the Q3 of 2022 which leaves them with 87 million more to sell to achieve that mythical 6 billion mark. Starting from PSP with the lowest game sales at 331 million to PS4 and PS5 with the highest combined sales of 2,084 games these three models make up a sizable chunk of game sales. The remaining 3 models make up for the rest of the sales as PS1 and PS3 games sales look nearly identical at 962 million and 999.4 million respectively which leaves PS2 with the remaining 1,537 million games sold as per the data available on Sony Interactive Entertainment Website.

In the past, Sony has usually achieved 60 to 65 million game sales in Q4 except for FY21 when a record sale of over 70.5 million software was recorded. However, by any means the 6 billion mark is expected to arrive no sooner than Q1 of the new fiscal year which runs from 1st April to 30th June.

The first PlayStation debuted in 1994 and the most recent one that is PS5 released in 2020. In a span of fewer than 30 years, Sony’s PlayStation to hit 6 billion mark and break it for the number of games sold by mid-2023. This comes at the back of excluding the game sales for quite a few models. Just imagine what would be the number then if all consoles and models were included. Nevertheless, with the PS5 still going strong along with PS4, the one thing that remains certain is the console’s popularity and great future where who knows a decade or so later we might see a 10 billion figure being breached as well.
