Microsoft to Make it Easier to Switch Default Apps in Windows 11

In A recent blog posted by Microsoft, the company announced that it will be making switching default apps in Windows 11 much easier than before. The new updates will bring a significant change in the Windows interface that will give the user control over their Windows taskbar. The announcement that Microsoft to make it easier to switch default apps in Windows 11 was much anticipated by the users, who will now be able to access their favorite apps from the start menu or the taskbar.

Microsoft will be using a new Settings deep link URI scheme that will let developers send users directly to the right place in Settings to change which program is the default for a particular file or link. Along with new interface developments, Microsoft will also start testing a new API to let apps pin a primary or secondary tile to the Windows taskbar.

In their latest blog, the company stated “We want to ensure that people are in control of what gets pinned to their Desktop, their Start menu and their Taskbar as well as to be able to control their default applications such as their default browser through consistent, clear and trustworthy Windows provided system dialogs and settings.”

In the same blog post, the company agreed on the following commitments.

  • Microsoft will ensure that all Windows users are in control of changes to their apps and pins and their defaults.
  • The company committed to providing a common way for application developers to offer the ability to make their app the default or pin their app to the Windows taskbar.
  • The company also committed to keeping using the same common support methods for pinning and defaults for Microsoft apps.

The new features will be introduced in the coming months with the Windows Insider Dev Channel. Along with new features, Microsoft also committed to launching a new update for Microsoft Edge that will adapt to the new Settings deep link URI for defaults and pinning APIs.

As Microsoft makes it easier to switch default apps in Windows 11, some significant changes to the taskbar and start menu interface are expected to appear with new updates in the coming months.
