Meta Explores Twitter Competitor as Elon Musk Calls Zuckerberg Copycat

Tech giant Meta is pondering over a new text-based app codenamed as P92. This comes in at a time when the parent company of Instagram and Facebook is coming out with new features every other week. Also, it is trying to exaggerate its stronghold in the tech market with investment and research in Artificial Intelligence. Mark Zuckerberg has been quite active on his social media pages, but this revelation was made not through official handle but by a spokesperson of Meta.

According to the publication of MoneyControl the text-based app codenamed P92 will be under the brand name of Instagram and so users will be able to login/register with use of their Instagram credentials. These pieces of information are based on the documents of internal product brief that put light on functioning and features of the new application.

“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” a Meta spokesperson said.

This revelation has been subject to all kinds of responses first of which came from Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, who uses Shibetoshi Nakamoto as his username on Twitter. He wrote, “why tho is he like “people are mad at elon musk, i’ll make an alternative because everyone loves me and facebook so much”. After which came the response of Twitter current CEO Elon Musk calling this new project of Meta as “Copy” with an emoji of cat.

According to report by Platformer, the new project will be overseen by Adam Mosseri. Also, the P92 app will support ActivityPub which is the decentralized social networking protocol being used by Twitter rival Mastodon, MoneyControl reported. Mastadon is an open source and interoperable platform that has plans to decentralize social networking and pulling control away from big corporations.

But these attempts of decentralization are not only concerned with Mastadon. Last month in February former Twitter CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey released his own decentralized app named Bluesky on iOS as Beta version. The difference here is that Bluesky uses its own inhouse protocol named as Authenticated Transfer Protocol or AT protocol.

But the future of this new project is in question taking into consideration the past experiences and decisions of the company. As seen recently Meta dropped prices of its VR headsets among suspicions of it shutting down the Metaverse project.
